The Bujinkan was founded by Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi, the Grandmaster of nine different schools, or ryu, of Ninpo and Budo. These ryu trace their roots back over 1000 years to a remote mountainous region of Japan named Iga. The practitioners had many different names such as Kusa, Rappa and Ninja. Their unconventional skills at scouting, spying and commando assault were used by many political leaders and generals in the struggle to unify Japan over 500 years ago.
Today the training is very different. We no longer are preparing to go to war; instead we can cultivate the development of a true warrior heart using the same techniques and skills forged over hundreds of years of survival and endurance. At the foundation of our martial art is Taijutsu, unarmed fighting. Taijutsu is the use of whole body movement and flexibility inside the forms and techniques from the past. It is a combination of ground hitting skills, rolling and leaping with striking and grappling forms. Advanced Black Belt level classes are taught building on these fundamental skills by introducing the practitioner to a wide range of combat experiences such as multiple attackers and traditional Japanese battle field weapons (Katana, Yari, Naginata, etc).
The Arizona Bujinkan Ninpo & Budo Kai has been training in Tempe, Arizona for over thirty-five years. Since 1984, the Arizona Bujinkan Ninpo & Budo Kai has been dedicated to promoting the teachings of the founder of the Bujinkan, Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi. Hatsumi Sensei is the 34th generation inheritor of Togakure Ryu and eight other historical Japanese Budo and Ninja Arts. The instructors make frequent yearly trips to Japan to stay current with Hatsumi Sensei’s teachings.

Please see our YouTube Channel for the latest videos! Our video series serves as an accompaniment to our current training.
Every year Soke Masaaki Hatsumi chooses a theme, or a set of themes, on which to focus our attention. Throughout the year we examine the body movement, techniques and weapons the theme emphasizes while reinforcing the basic skills of rolling, falling, kamae (balanced stances) and grappling.
In Tempe, fundamentals classes are offered regularly on Monday night at 7:00 PM; this is an introductory class where we will systematically explore the intersection of history, anatomy, and the laws of physics with taijutsu. Tuesday classes typically examine ryu specific waza at an intermediate level. (Invitation only) Thursday nights delve into advanced subjects.
Advanced training and Black Belt Workshops are also held on a regular basis.
$20 per individual class.
$60 per month for one (1) class a week.
$100 per month for all classes offered plus the monthly Sunday seminar.
$40 for monthly Sunday seminar.
Family rates to be determined on individual basis.
Senior instructors are available, by appointment, for private or small group training on pre-arranged topics. Please inquire.

I believe in the power of the individual to learn and grow, overcoming the difficult obstacles and challenges faced in a lifetime. I believe that Bujinkan Ninpo and Budo Taijutsu provide the necessary tools and skills to meet the challenges and to prevail against the obstacles while discovering ways of becoming masters of our own destinies and to serve as guides for succeeding generations to understand the value of a true Martial Art. - Peter Crocoll

合宿へようこそ!
Welcome to the 2025 Arizona Bujinkan Campout.
The topic for this weekend will be Shurikenjutsu and Togakure Ryu Bikenjutsu. We will be looking at the use of both senban
and bō shuriken and their applications with the use of a ninja-to as used in Togakure Ryu Ninpo Taijutsu. We will begin with the
fundamentals of the basic throws of the bō and senban shuriken followed by many variations and unique applications to these throws..
What to bring:
Training items to bring: bō & senban shuriken, soft/training senban shuriken, ninja-tō, bokken, mogitō/iaitō, fukuro shinai,
and an obi.
Weather Forecast:
We are expecting low 80s°F for the highs this weekend. Lows may drop into the low 40s°F.
Check the Fort Valley Weather Station on Wunderground.com for the latest status.
The campsite will be primitive dispersed camping north-west of the San Francisco Peaks and just north of Saddle Mountain off of FR9220Y. The
dirt roads are passable by passenger vehicle, though you may need to go slowly in a few spots. The coordinates are (roughly):
35.45232, -111.73165.
Please note that Google Maps is incorrect regarding the roads in this area and will attempt to take you through Kendrick Park and around a long difficult way. Please follow the map presented below that uses FR523.
The Google Map below will guide you to the start of FR523 from Flagstaff.
The turn off onto FR523 will look like this:
This is where the route becomes entertaining (i.e., standard phone mapping apps will not guide you to the destination). As you turn onto FR523, reset your trip meter. In just under 0.4 mile, FR523 forks to the right; it is the visibly smoother road. Follow FR523, passing a quary on the right side along the way, for another 1.8 miles (~2.1 miles from the initial turn off of HWY 180); the right turn coming up is FR9220Y. Drive along FR9220Y a short way to the campsite. Look for the shuriken signs along the route from HWY 180.
Alternatives to camping:
There are numerous hotels in the area that are a reasonable drive away. The closest standard hotel would be the Basecamp At Snowbowl. A less traditional option would be the the Nordic Village Cabins & Yurts. However, there are many other possibilities. Please note, hotels and other accomodations fill up quickly on the weekends in Flagstaff.
